Historie britské kočky
V roce 1901 byl ve Velké Británii založen 1. klub domácích krátkosrstých koček Short Haired Cat Society nad Mansclub (dodnes funguje). Tím se dostala anglická domácí kočka více do popředí a mohla se začít psát její historie. Na ojedinělých kočičích výstavách té doby se předváděly převážně perské, siamské, habešské či ruské modré kočky. Na přelomu 19.tého a 20.tého století byly nejvíce v oblibě perské kočky, které vlastnila tehdejší elita. Anglická domácí kočka, vyskytující se v mnoha barvách i podobách, dostala svůj plemenný standard právě kolem roku 1900. Vzniklo tak nové plemeno - britská krátkosrstá kočka. Až do roku 1976 bylo ve Velké Británii možné zaregistrovat každou kočku, která splňovala požadavky na typ - statná konstrukce těla, podobná perským kočkám, avšak s krátkou srstí. Tak začali chovatelé vybírat kočky mohutné, s hustou srstí, aby docílili požadovaný typ. K urychlení tohoto šlechtitelského procesu využívali perské kočky, které do britských často zakřižovali. Tehdy byly povoleny pouze tyto barvy: modrá, černá, bílá, černobílá, červená, stříbřitá tabby, želvovinová, želvovinová s bílou a tabby s bílou.V okénku věnovaném současným barevným varietám se sami můžete přesvědčit, jaké úsilí chovatelé vynaložili, aby tento okruh rozšířili. Současně se šlechtěním britské kočky probíhalo na evropském kontinentě šlechtění kočky evropské, tehdy typově velmi podobné britské kočce. Jelikož ve skandinávských zemích šli chovatelé jinou cestou, a domácí kočky nekřížili s perskými, byly tyto evropské kočky časem dost odlišné od koček chovaných v Anglii. Proto muselo dojít k rozdělení obou plemen na kočku britskou, a evropskou. Současný typ britské kočky (viz Standard plemene) vyžaduje cobby stavbu těla, mohutné kulaté tlapky, kulatou hlavu s malými oušky, velké, kulaté oči a hlavně krátkou, hustou plyšovou srst. Perské kočky se mnoho let s britkami křížit nesmějí, avšak pozůstatky tohoto šlechtění se dodnes přenášejí v podobě genů pro dlouhosrstost a občas se v chovatelských stanicích stane, že se krátkosrstým rodičům narodí kotě s dlouhou perskou srstí. Tyto překrásné, povahově unikátní kočky, nazývané highlander, lowlander nebo britannica jsou však u FIFe neuznané plemeno a nesmějí se použít do chovu.
